“They all gave the same answer – Courage”
I was listening to Brene Brown’s ‘Dare to Lead’ podcast and this statement struck me.
The question she had asked a large number of Leaders was “What do you need to lead today?” (The actual question was rather longer but that was the gist of it)
And to her surprise, they all gave the same answer.
Later, I found a piece I’d written some time ago on leadership. Had I put ‘Courage’ in my list of attributes?
Yep. Number 10 of 10. Not because it’s the least important, because I wanted to make it my final point for emphasis. Leading is a courageous act.
And I realised that a big part of my purpose is to make people courageous enough to lead, from wherever they are in the organisation, in society or in their lives. Because we need many to lead if we are to decrapify work.
Which begs the question, what do you need help with to have that courage?
